A masterpiece. Nothing less.

According to Wikipedia (with corrections by yours truly taken from the back of the LP jacket):"Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" Recorded Columbia Studio B, New York City August 20, 1969 • Miles Davis – trumpet • Wayne Shorter – soprano saxophone • Bennie Maupin – bass clarinet • Larry Young – electric piano – Left • Chick Corea – electric piano – Right • John McLaughlin – electric guitar • Dave Holland – acoustic bass (I don’t really hear him on this track) • Harvey Brooks – “Fender” bass • Lenny White– drum set – Left • Charles Alias- drums (I only hear two drummers on this track, and I don’t think he’s one of them) • Jack DeJohnette – drum set – Right • Juma Santos (credited as "Jim Riley") – percussionThis is a brilliant excursion into collective improvisation (and also one of the shorter tracks) from one of the most seminal LPs ever recorded, “Bitches Brew,” by Miles Davis (and bandmates).Other than the absolutely killer groove, there are two things about this track that really interest me:The entire performance seems to be a tapestry of sound wherein a new thread or color (whatever soloist that might be) emerges into prominence for a bit, and then recedes back into the basic texture of the musical weave, once again quietly improvising in the background as another new thread emerges;…and…What you have represented here is an incredibly fecund hotbed of what ROLLING STONE will refer to in 1974, five years after this recording, as “The New Jazz-Rock” (BS&T, Chicago, Ten Wheel Drive and others representing, I suppose, “The Old Jazz-Rock”), but what will become known almost immediately after the appearance of that article as “Fusion.”Represented in the personnel above are future members of groups which, within three years from the time of this recording, will become known as Weather Report, Herbie Hancock’s “Headhunters” band, Return to Forever, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

The heavyist groove possible.
